Toronto based professional pianist, composer and teacher.   Born in Australia but fell in love with Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk and more so came to North America to be closer to this music.  I love jazz and have three cd's ' Alone and Together','Touching You' and 'Unaccompanied'.  

I work as a pianist in Canada performing in clubs and on the jobbing circuit, either solo piano or with different ensembles including a traditional jazz band (The Steamboat Strutters) jazz violin trio and big swing band.  My own trio is piano, bass, drums with guest sax.

Born and raised in Montreal - moved to Toronto  in the 70's and enjoyed all types of music, especially the jazz around town.  Moved to Cornwall in 2007 to be closer to family but really miss the weekly jazz at the Chick 'n' Deli and many other venues.  Relocated back to Toronto in 2015 and once again take every opportunity to soak up all the wonderful music genres this city has to offer!

In a very short time, jazz trumpeter Rachel Therrien has distinguished herself on the thriving Montreal music scene and internationally. Still very much a young artist, her extensive performance resume includes renowned artists such as Vic Vogel, Remi Bolduc, Oliver Jones, Carole Welsman, Anancaona de Cuba, Klimax, Michel Legrand, Ginette Reno, Alex Bellegrade, Sophie Desmarais, and more.

In 2008, Rachel spent 9 months at the Superior Institute of Arts in Cuba, studying with great Cuban musicians such as Elidio Chappotin, Yasek Manzano and Jorge Rubio. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz interpretation at Université de Montréal in 2010 under the direction of her trumpet professor, Ron Di Lauro. Since then, she has directed her own project, the Rachel Therrien Quintet whose debut CD On Track was released in Sepptember 2011.

This album features original compositions from Rachel Therrien at her very best, accompanied by an ensemble of the finest emerging musicians in Montreal. The album’s lead single, “Yremaya à Montréal” won 1st place of Espace musique’s “Palmares Jazz”.

The Trane Studio is honoured to present Rachel’s Toronto live performance debut, in keeping with our tradition of providing a stage for talented young artists to thrive and grow.
