The leader of the Hot Five Jazzmakers is currently out of action.
Brian Towers broke his left arm (he is left-handed) while on vacation in Spain in December 2018. He is unable to play trombone and has missed the last two of the band's gigs in 2018. He had the bone graft reset at the end of 2018 and remains in a cast until around the end of January 2019.
Janet Shaw has been performing stellar work as the band's stand-in leader and Jackie Chia is depping adeptly on trombone. The Christmas gig saw no less than four ladies playing on stage; one of the refreshing aspects of jazz is enjoying different band dynamics and this was and is certainly true of the Hot Five Jazzmakers.
Brian is hopeful that he can play in February. February 6 marks the band's 30th anniversary at The C'est What? tavern. Brian can be reached at [email protected]
